I’ve been thinking a lot this week about things we can do to take care of ourselves. In my experience, most women struggle with work, home, and family, with the lion’s share of responsibility falling on us rather than on our loving but sometimes clueless spouses.
Of course, the irony is that if we spend all our time doing these things for others, we have no time for ourselves. We eventually run out of steam. We end up feeling drained and exhausted and resentful. Our care for our families begins to diminish or be forced.
So what can we do for ourselves that takes only 10-15 minutes — not too much out of our busy days — that can recharge our batteries?
Here’s what I do:
- Meditate
- Take a walk
- Enjoy the sun set
- Bird watch off the aft deck
- Do a series of yoga stretches
What do you do to give yourself a moment of rest?

Ah, something I can totally identify with. Here are the 10-15 minute activities I use to recharge:
- Sit down and close my eyes for a mini-nap
- Read 1-2 chapters of the novel I’m reading
- Turn on some music and sing along
- Look out the window and daydream a bit
- READ.
- Watch TV.
- Workout. Exercise time for mommy is sacred.
That’s pretty much it.
